Epilepsy is a chronic brain disorder, characterized by frequent seizures, neurodevelopmental disorders and affecting the quality of life of people who suffer from it as well as their families, with cognitive, psychological and social neurobiological consequences.
This pathology has few effective therapeutic resources, which has led to the search for alternative treatments, currently being medicinal cannabis one of the ones that has generated the most interest. Numerous studies have been carried out in animals and humans in order to gather information on its effectiveness in epileptic seizures, the reports collected consider it a promising antiepileptic drug.
Epilepsy affects around 1.5% of the world population. Of which around a third of them do not respond to conventional treatments, which is known as refractory or treatment-resistant epilepsy.
Efectos del CBD en el tratamiento de epilepsia
Cannabidol can change the lives of patients who experience these different forms of epilepsy, currently these treatments begin to be used after two years of age and a reduction in seizures has been detected in a percentage of around 50 % until the total cessation of symptoms, which translates into an improvement both at an emotional, cognitive, motor and socialization level.
Although this is not the case in all patients, some of them may need to incorporate THC into the treatment, which must be done carefully to avoid dependence.
It should be noted that the cannabinoid system has many functions, such as neurogenesis, mood, lipid and glucose metabolism, or growth.
Interactions
The interactions that CBD may have with other antiepileptic drugs should be taken into account, for this it is essential that the treatment is carried out with a specialist who evaluates doses, drugs, adverse effects and others.
Just as you should bear in mind that when incorporating CBD into the treatment of epilepsy, conventional medication should not be stopped abruptly, but slowly and progressively.
